Background of the Study
Women’s economic participation has long been recognized as a cornerstone of sustainable development and poverty alleviation. In Ilesa West Local Government Area, Osun State, women play a critical role in contributing to household income through diverse economic activities. Over the years, socio-cultural transformations and economic imperatives have spurred women to engage in both formal and informal sectors, significantly impacting family livelihoods (Babatunde, 2023). Traditionally relegated to domestic roles, contemporary women in Ilesa West now assume responsibilities in agriculture, small-scale trading, and entrepreneurial ventures, thereby diversifying income sources. This evolution is not only reshaping gender roles but also enhancing household financial stability and community resilience. Despite these advances, women often face challenges such as limited access to credit facilities, market information, and formal employment opportunities. These constraints hinder their full economic potential and underscore the need for targeted interventions (Ogunleye, 2025). Furthermore, the dual burden of domestic and economic responsibilities places additional stress on women, affecting their overall productivity and quality of life. The study critically examines the multifaceted contributions of women to household income, exploring the socio-economic and institutional factors that facilitate or impede their participation. By integrating qualitative interviews with quantitative data analysis, the research aims to provide a holistic understanding of women’s economic roles in Ilesa West. The findings will inform policymakers and stakeholders on strategies to enhance women’s economic empowerment, which is crucial for fostering broader social and economic development. In addition, the study addresses gaps in existing literature regarding gender dynamics in household economies within local contexts (Babatunde, 2023).

Statement of the Problem
Despite the significant contributions of women to household income in Ilesa West, numerous challenges impede their economic empowerment. Many women face barriers such as inadequate access to financial services, limited market opportunities, and entrenched socio-cultural norms that restrict their economic activities (Babatunde, 2023). These challenges result in suboptimal income generation and perpetuate gender disparities in financial decision-making. Additionally, the lack of supportive government policies and institutional frameworks further exacerbates the difficulties encountered by women entrepreneurs and workers. The economic contributions of women, though evident, are often undervalued and underreported, leading to policies that do not fully address their needs (Ogunleye, 2025). This study seeks to critically evaluate the extent and nature of women’s contributions to household income while identifying the obstacles that limit their full participation in the economy. The research also examines how these challenges affect overall household welfare and economic stability. Addressing these issues is essential for developing interventions that not only empower women but also enhance the economic resilience of households in Ilesa West.

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To assess the economic contributions of women to household income.

  2. To identify the socio-economic barriers affecting women’s financial participation.

  3. To recommend strategies for enhancing women’s economic empowerment.

Research Questions:

  1. How do women contribute to household income in Ilesa West?

  2. What socio-economic challenges hinder women’s financial participation?

  3. Which policy measures can improve women’s economic empowerment?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Women’s participation significantly increases household income.

  2. Socio-economic barriers negatively affect women’s economic contributions.

  3. Supportive policies enhance women’s financial empowerment.

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it underscores the critical role of women in household income generation in Ilesa West. Its findings will provide a basis for policy interventions aimed at reducing gender disparities and promoting economic empowerment. By highlighting challenges and proposing evidence-based solutions, the research contributes to improved socio-economic outcomes and sustainable community development. The study also enriches academic discourse on gender and economic development (Babatunde, 2023; Ogunleye, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to examining women’s contributions to household income in Ilesa West. It focuses on economic factors within the local context and does not extend to other regions or broader national issues.

Definitions of Terms:

  1. Economic Empowerment: The process of increasing the capacity of individuals to participate in and benefit from economic activities.

  2. Household Income: The total income earned by all members of a household.

  3. Socio-economic Barriers: Factors that hinder economic participation due to social and economic constraints.
